The Remnant

by Monte Wolverton

The Remnant is the latest in a long line of dystopian fiction. It’s based in 2063 in a world that is run by one government. They have tried to purge the world of any religion by burning all religious articles and sending those that refuse to be “retrained” to work camps.

This story centers on Grant Cochrin as he tries to escape his work camp and find other Christians in a rumored Christian Community. He has his family and friends with him on this perilous and very long journey.

The Remnant is a great read. It’s very detail oriented, which is a bit much for me, but I definitely don’t hold it against the author! Many people enjoy details. I thought that it was intriguing and definitely holds your attention. Check it out for those teenagers of yours this Christmas season! They are sure to love it!!

Thanks for this book in exchange for my review. As always, this is my honest opinion. Here’s to many more!!

The Choosing

by Rachelle Dekker

Following in the footsteps of the huge dystopian trend, Ted Dekker’s daughter releases her debut novel with a SMASH. Carrington Hale is at the top of her class and absolutely beautiful, so when she is not chosen as a bride everyone is dumbfounded. She’s quickly swept away by the city guards to live her life as a servant and nobody.

Beautifully written and spiritually deep. Through the ups and downs Carrington goes through, she learns that she is not a nobody but deeply full of worth. It’s a great coming of age book that shows we are all worth God’s time. What a great message. I definitely recommend if you are into books like The Hunger Games, Divergent series, Mazerunner and other like books.

I was curious as to whether or not this book would be really dark like her father’s books. There were very dark moments that were hard to take, but it never boarded on demonism or other dark issues like that. It was simply good verses evil.

Thank you for this fabulous read in exchange for my review. As always, this is my honest opinion. Here’s to many more!!

1. What is the worst name a person could have?

Nadine –That’s a tough one! Being an author, I really want to come up with something horrible, hehe, but I think it’d be cruel for some poor kid to have the name of a famous villain or book character. Like Harry Potter or Bilbo or something equally popular. Because then it never feels like its your name and everyone knows that your parents were geeks. LOL.

Charity – That is true. My parents almost named my sister Christopher Robin. Lucky for her, she was a girl…

2. How many different hair colors have you tried? Favorite? Hubby’s Favorite?

Nadine –Confession: I’ve never dyed my hair. *shrug* I just never thought to. I’ve permed it, but little did I know that when I met hubby, he was hoping to marry a girl who’d never colored her hair! HA! Silly man. 😉 Brownie points for me. 😛

If I ever tried something, I’d do something crazy. Mixed colors and feathers. 😛 What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to your hair?

Charity – Bizarre! That was actually something he was hoping??? So crazy! I have had it every color under the sun. My hubby likes it bright red or blonde. I am not sure. I just like change.

Ok. You get the idea. Every color.

This is the most current —>

— I TOTALLY get that one!!

3. Do you sneeze like a man or like a little tiny mouse (or something in between)?

Nadine –I sneeze like a tornado. (The type that makes people stop and say, “Woah! Uh…bless you.”) I hiccup like a mouse.

Charity – ha! That’s awesome. My sneezes sound like a cough so NOBODY says “bless you” to me. waaahhhhhh. And, I sneeze in sets of 7. (That’s the number of perfection, FYI)

4. Can you sew? Are you crafty?

Nadine –I have the desire to sew and create masterpieces but it never works! But I love to get crafty for birthday parties.

Charity – I like to do that stuff too, but never find the time. Sometimes it makes me really cranky though. I HATE HATE HATE scrapbooking. blah.

5. TV!!!!! MY FAVORITE SUBJECT. Ok, last show you Netflix, binge watched?

Nadine –We don’t really binge watch, but the closest I got was with BBC’s Merlin. I know, it’s like a little kid’s show or something, but….*tear*….MERLINNNNNN!!! He’s currently my favorite fictional character in the world. *hugs*

Okay, you admitted…TV’s your favorite subject. What’s your least favorite and most favorite TV shows? Confess.

Charity – OMGosh. I don’t know. Too hard to answer! Last show I binge watched would be Prison Break (Current Binge). Hubby and I watch it every night before bed. List of favorites? Ok, here we go (in no particular order):

Blacklist
Pretty Little Liars
Once
Survivor
Turn

I am sure there are a million more, but those came to mind right away. ❤

Least Favorite? Hmm. Probably anything Star Trekie.

— Nadine is not obsessed. That’s a good thing.

6. Did you know that Harry Potter can rap?

Nadine –*jaw drop* Whu…? *runs to YouTube* WOAH! You’re right! That’s just….cool.

Well did you know that Aragorn did all his own stunts and used a real sword?

Charity – Oh yeah! I can one up that! It took 2-3 years to finish filming and he remained in character 24/7. He EVEN SLEPT WITH HIS HORSE to build up the rapport!!!!

— Happy Dance!

Charity 5 / Nadine 4

7. Do you keep your toenails up during the winter, or is it just a free for all until flip-flop weather?

Nadine –Free for all, baby.  I’ll get about two pedicures a year (on my birthday and for a mid-summer wedding) and they last me all year! 😛

Charity – Woot! Nice. I usually keep mine up. I never go get pedicures though. I just do it myself. Much cheaper…

— Nadine is NOT high-maintenance.

Charity 5 / Nadine 5

8. How do you strive to bring God the most glory in your life?

Nadine –By seeking Him daily and committing everything I do to Him. He then takes me onto the right paths, makes me run into the right people, and speaks through my writing where I can’t. 🙂

Charity –

— God wins!

Charity 5 / Nadine 5

9. Aragorn or Legolas?

Nadine –Aragorn. Der.

Charity – False. Legolas.

Charity 6 / Nadine 6

10. Favorite smoothie blend?

Nadine –Strawberry bannana!

Favorite ice cream blend?

Charity – Ohhh! Nice. Nope, not me! I like the works:

Cabbage
Spinach
Peaches
Mangoes
Bananas
NO SUGAR ALLOWED!! (already enough in the fruit)

As far as ice cream? I am not a huge fan. If I am going to have it, I will eat Chocolate Peanut-Butter. I could do without though.

— YUM for smoothies!

Thanks, Nadine! I had so much fun getting to know you 🙂 I can’t wait to check out your books!!!!!

Feeling a Little Behind?

Ok, so all the rage at the theater is Dystopian Future. Are you feeling a little left behind when your kids are saying, “I want you to braid my hair like Katniss’ hair”. Or, “Thomas was crazy for going against those Grievers”. “I didn’t even notice that the movie was in black and white until Jonas started seeing it in color and explaining to everyone what that was like!!!” OMGosh! I can’t believe that neither one stayed with Abnegation! She’s going to get CRUSHED in Dauntless!” (Just, FYI, if you are reading this on a mobile device, it may not match up with the prices very well.)

Fear not, Moms! I’ve got your back!! For today, there are some good prices to get you caught up on these great reads. Sure, they are young adult books, but, believe me, they are GREAT! You will love reading them. You’ll be as hooked as your 12 year old daughter!

Let’s start with The Hunger Games.https://i2.wp.com/0707c778e0f1481535fe-36b693bb9065cd15445b260c56542cbf.r55.cf2.rackcdn.com//assets/e3cded20-a3d1-11e2-aa12-bc764e10a080__photo_thumb.jpg Sound vulgar? Believe me, it’s perfectly fine for your teenagers to see. They are quite careful about the gore that is shown and it is a picture of America in the future and where we could possibly be heading. It’s truly a great series and completely free of anything you, as a parent, would worry about (based on the name of the book). However, don’t take my word for it, read it yourself!!

The Hunger Games (Hunger Games Trilogy, Book 1)   Catching Fire (Hunger Games Trilogy, Book 2)   Mockingjay (Hunger Games Trilogy, Book 3)

           $3.99                             $6.99                                 $6.50

Ok, moving on now to Divergent. It’s second book will be releasing in the theaters next month. So, you need to hurry and get caught up. The first movie is in my top 5 movies, hands down! Hunger games is close, but I love me some Divergent!!! Basically, it’s the future, the world has gone to pot and people are living in a world where you choose which faction you live in based on you and your personality. Some people are “Divergents” which means that they don’t fit in just one faction, and thus are considered dangerous because it’s hard to control the world with people that don’t fit in.

Divergent (Divergent Trilogy, Book 1)   Insurgent (Divergent Trilogy, Book 2)   Allegiant (Divergent Trilogy, Book 3)

           $2.99                                $6.99                               $3.99

Next, let’s hit up The Giver. Wonderful book. Everyone is programed to live life the same. Everyone has the same kind of house. Everyone is assigned a job based on their potential. Everyone is practically a robot. However, there is one person that knows the histories. That person knows pain, color, emotion and everything that goes with it. He is called “The Giver”. As he is aging, young Jonas is now being trained to learn all that The Giver knows and is quite overwhelmed by it.

The Giver (Giver Quartet, Book 1)   Gathering Blue (Giver Quartet, Book 2)   Messenger (Giver Quartet, Book 3)   Son (Giver Quartet, Book 4)

$2.99                    $4.99                     $4.99                   $7.39

Now we are at the Maze Runner. Also a book that you won’t be able to set down. Thomas wakes up to find he is in some sort of weird field with a bunch of other boys. His memory is completely wiped and the only thing he knows is his name. This book has slight language in it. I think the movie may have had more. Overall, it’s very clean and keeps you flipping the pages. Eventually he realizes that they are in a maze and need to figure it out before the walls close each evening to keep the “Grievers” out. On a side note, the movie was so far away from the book, you will be surprised! Unlike Hunger Games and Divergent and The Giver, this movie decides to take it’s own direction and not stick to the book. I did not enjoy the Maze Runner movie because of that.

The Maze Runner (The Maze Runner, Book 1)   The Scorch Trials (The Maze Runner, Book 2)   The Death Cure (The Maze Runner, Book 3)   The Kill Order (Prequel)

$1.99                      $2.80                     $4.99                      $5.99

So, there you go, mommas! Get caught up on these great reads. The Hunger Games will be finishing up this November. Divergent is sent to have it’s second book out in March. The other two are unknown at this point. We shall see!!

Enjoy some Dystopian Living (:
