A Viscount’s Proposal

by Melanie Dickerson

Oh, Melanie! How you love us to write a Regency series!

In the second book to her Regency Spies of London series, we continue on with the Langdon family. This time it’s the story of Leorah, Nicholas’ sister, and Viscount Edward Withinghall. These two do not appreciate each others’ differences, to be sure! Their bickering and irritability are very entertaining and keep you laughing throughout.

Melanie is a YA author, but her books are enjoyable by all. The characters are very deep and hilarious. There are a lot of fun Regency “celebrity” references and many scenes reminiscent of Jane Austen’s novels (P&P especially!).

Make sure to pick up a copy! Loads of fun and you will fall in love with Edward! (Links in the pics). Be sure to pick up some of her other fun novels as well!

Thanks for this fun read in exchange for my thoughts. As always, this is my honest opinion. Here’s to many more!

Let’s have some fun, shall we?

The rules are simple. I ask Tosca some random questions. She replies and then I give my answers. Each winning answer is worth one point and I get to decide whose answer is better.

It’s my blog.

Here we go!

1. Have you ever gone whale watching?

Tosca – Yes! While halibut fishing in Alaska, where I caught a 60-pound halibut. Took me nearly an hour to reel that sucker in as humpback whales breached off the side of the boat. But the more important question is did I eat sandwiches–and the answer is “yes.” Because we know that fishing is all about eating.

Charity – Ha! That is so true… How cool! You are a fancy pants fishing in Alaska with whales. I am going to quit right now!!!

— Uh, Obviously…

Charity 0 / Tosca 1

2. What song gets stuck in your head and won’t get out? (You’re welcome)

Tosca – The Barney song. GAH!

Charity – Well, it used to be It’s a Small World, but now…It’s mostly just Taylor Swift. On repeat. Always. Constantly. Never Ending.

I get one song out and another one turns on.

— At least mine is semi-cool…

Charity 1 / Tosca 1

3. What’s the strangest food you’ve been served?

Tosca – Maybe sea urchin or sea cucumber? Though my fiancé swears by grilled peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches with pickles, which I think is way weirder.

Charity – Ugh. And, are you completely sure about marrying this guy? 😮 ha!

— Tosca and her man!!

Charity 1 / Tosca 2

4. Once Upon a Time or Grimm? Why?

Tosca – Grimm. It’s scarier. I like scary.

Charity – Ooh. I like scary too!! All though, I do prefer Once Upon a Time because it’s something we can watch with both of our kids (16 and 7). But, when the little one is in bed, the creepy and bloody (<3) movies come out!

5. What’s your best roller skating move?

Tosca – Staying upright. That’s the best I got.

Charity – Hey, that’s something! Woot!! That’s about all I’ve got too. I can rock a couples skate though. (I really don’t know what that means).

— Tie

Charity 1 / Tosca 2

6. Any fun roller rink stories to go with it?

Tosca – I don’t, except for–remember those roller skates that are metal that used to be strapped on over your shoes? The outdoor kind? Those were my first roller skates (hey, it was the early 70s). I think I could sell them as antiques on eBay now. I used to love those things.

Charity – Oh yeah! I remember!! I was born in the 70’s, so those were my first skates too. In fact, I was born a few weeks after Elvis died. I wonder if I am him re-incarnated. Probably.

So, growing up…We used to go roller skating every month with the youth group. We went with another church as their guests. The only problem was, they made us listen to The Carpenters and Anne Murray on repeat. They literally had about 5 songs they would replay over and over and over the whole 3-4 hours we were there. Oh. My. Gosh. You can only listen to Can I Have This Dance For The Rest Of My Life once without wanting to stab your ears with pencils. Wait. Nope, not even once.

— Mine.

Charity 2 / Tosca 2

7. Coolest historical or quaint town you have been to? Why?

Tosca – Deer Island, Maine. When the fog rolls in, it looks like a cross between The Mists of Avalon and something from a Stephen King novel.

Charity – Ooh! Very creepy!! hmm.

I live in Virginia and there is this awesome little town on the Eastern Shore. It’s called Cape Charles and it is freakin’ adorable!! They have this sand bar that goes on forever, so you can walk out in the water really far. Here’s an overhead pic.

Charity 2 / Tosca 2

8. How do you strive to bring God the most glory in your life?

Tosca – By exercising my talents and gifts in some way every day–whether it be something as simple as cooking a meal or writing a novel, and by showing love and acceptance to those I encounter throughout the day and seeing them through God’s eyes.

Charity – Love it. Beautiful.

— God Wins!

Charity 2 / Tosca 2

9. If you had to go undercover, what would your disguise be?

Tosca – A Ninja, of course. I’m Asian. And everything I own is black. And I have moves, too. Maybe.

Charity – Hmm. I like it. I saw one of your moves at the top of this page…Fancy.

I took Kali for a bit. It’s a form of stick and knife fighting. I. Love. It. So much fun!!!! Unfortunately, I’m as white and pasty as they come, so I am not cool enough to be Asian and a ninja.

— Tosca gets it!

Charity 2 / Tosca 3

10. Favorite childhood toy?

Tosca – I used to have this beanbag frog that my parents would make have conversations with me. Hey, it was 1970. Elmo wasn’t invented yet.

Charity – See, that’s one of those things you don’t tell people. Kinda like the fiancé thing. 🙂

It was all about Strawberry Shortcake for this girl!

Charity 1 / Hannah 1

5. Are you embarrassed of your prom photos?

Hannah – Absolutely. I looked like a baby prostitute. My mom had to use whiteout in all the photos because she was so embarrassed of how they came out.

Charity – Ha!!! haha! White out?! That’s amazing.

I was a homeschool dork. No prom for me! Maybe I was lucky…

– Can’t win it if you don’t have it!

Charity 1 / Hannah 2

6. Do you absolutely love a good food fight?

Hannah – Never taken part, but I think I would dominate.

Charity – Bam. Queen of the food fight right here!

– Totally get that!

Charity 2 / Hannah 2

7. Dumbest thing you did in college?

Hannah – One time I ate a name-tag. I feel embarrassed to go any further than that.

Charity – 😮 Nice…

– I am just going to give that to you.

Charity 2 / Hannah 3

8. Best prank (on you, or you played.)

Hannah – One time in college, all of my residents stacked all of my furniture up in the middle of the room. It was nearly impossible to get it all unstacked safely.

Charity – Nice!! I will have to remember that!

We played a great prank on my son when he had a friend over. My hubby and I turned the shower on in our bathroom so it looked like hubs was in there. I sat down to watch tv and hubs went outside and started trying to get into their window. They came out screaming like little girls when they realized that ol’ dad was in the shower and I was in the living room so it couldn’t be us. I said they were imagining it and to go back to bed (tween boys). Hubby started messing with the window and they came running back out. I texted him and said to make sure they saw him run away this time. So, when they came out, I said, I’ll come with you to check it out. So, I pulled up the blind and his face was in the window (with a mask) and he took off running. They were totally freaked out. I was laughing so hard. They finally figured it out… Let’s just say they slept with bats and fake guns all night. Or, didn’t sleep with bats and fake guns all night.

– tie.

Charity 2 / Hannah 3

9. Favorite Movie?

Hannah – You’ve Got Mail. My second is Elizabethtown — It’s virtually unknown to a lot of people, but I watch it every time I am sick.

Charity – I’ve totally seen it! Love You’ve Got Mail. Elizabethtown was alright… My favorite is bloody movies. Warrior is my favorite! When I’m sick, it’s the Emma Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility.

Charity 2 / Hannah 3

10. Ever been in a hot dog eating contest? (Or something equivalent?)

Hannah – Again, I wish! Have you??

Charity – OMGosh, no!! ha ha.

– Hannah gets it for wishing! Yikes!

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest

by Melanie Dickerson

Let me be clear. This is Melanie’s best book yet.

As you probably know, her books are based off of fairy tales. This one is a reversed Robin Hood story where a female, Odette, is a poacher in the king’s forest. She is only acting as such to provide for the poor. Of course, the man she falls in love with happens to be the forester hired to keep poachers off the land. Ahhh…Thus we have a great story!

What I really love about this book is how faithful the characters are. They seek God and both are mature from the start. Desiring to serve God and help the poor and needy, she is torn over breaking the laws to do so. Jorgan, the hero, is of solid character and also seeks to serve God. If you know me AT ALL, you know that I love a hero that stays true in all circumstances. I will not elaborate, but will only say that he is true.

Well written. It is obvious that this is written for a broader, older audience. Melanie’s previous books have been YA novels and I believe this one is different. The plot moved quickly, without too much description (you know what I mean…I don’t need to know the color of everybody’s shirt and each decoration at the masquerade). The characters were heroes that you could adore from start to finish. 5 Solid Stars.

Please pick one up for yourself and a friend! In fact, the Kindle versions are ONLY $4.74 right now! The price will double when it releases in a couple of weeks. Link is in the pic above AND the first few that pre-order will receive a BEAUTIFUL bookmark from me in the mail (of Melanie’s books!!!).

Fairy Tale Romance Collection — by Melanie Dickerson

Melanie Dickerson knew what she was doing when she started writing YA novels. All girls, whether 3 years old or 90 years old, want to be a princess!! In retelling these fairy tales, she has won over the hearts of many!

In this collection, we have Melanie first book. The story of “Sleeping Beauty” is retold  in The Healer’s Apprentice. We are introduced to Rose Roemer. She is an apprentice under the watchful eye of her protector. Of course, you are familiar with the story and can guess the rest (;

Next, in Melanie’s second book, The Merchants Daughter,
we are introduced to Annabel as she must work for the the man that “has a beard and one of his arms is afflicted”. She finds herself inside the castle in the midst of a “Beauty and the Beast” retelling.

In her third book, The Fairest Beauty, she begins to introduce characters we will see throughout the rest of her books. Sophie is a servant in her own father’s home because he has died and she is left with her evil stepmother. Nope! Not “Cinderella”! Not yet!! This is the retelling of “Snow White”.

Now we have “Cinderella”!! In, The Captive Maiden, we find the story of Sophie and Valten. This, Valten, is the brother of Gabe (whom Sophie married in the last book!!)! I don’t need to tell you the details. You get the idea! It’s everyone’s favorite fairy tale!

Lastly, The Princess Spy, is a retelling of “The Princess and the Frog”. Now, this was a bit of a stretch, as far as calling it a “retelling” of that particular story. However, it was still fun and entertaining. The story is centered Margaretha, who is the sister of Gabe and Valten.

Whew! Did you follow all of that? Well, you will have to check them out for yourself! The link for this set is in the pic above. The individual links are also posted.

My thoughts? Love these books. They are written for YA, but so much fun. I, personally, like her first book the most. They are all wonderful! We need more of these type for our youth.

Keep an eye out for Melanie’s new book, The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest. Release date is set for May 12th.

Thanks, booklookbloggers, for this wonderful collection! As always, this is my honest opinion. Here’s to many more!!
